Apple plans to revamp Siri into a built-in chatbot to counter OpenAI
Apple’s long-awaited Siri overhaul could transform the assistant into a full-fledged chatbot—closer to ChatGPT than the voice-only experience users know today. According to reports, the revamped Siri is expected to be deeply integrated into iOS 27 and may take center stage at WWDC in June.
Internally codenamed “Campos,” the new Siri is designed to work with both voice and text, signaling a shift in Apple’s AI strategy. While Apple previously resisted positioning Siri as a chatbot, competitive pressure from AI-first players appears to have forced a rethink.
The timing is strategic. OpenAI is reportedly moving toward hardware, led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, creating a direct competitive threat to Apple’s ecosystem-driven advantage. A more capable, conversational Siri helps Apple defend its position by keeping AI experiences native to iPhone and Mac.
This move also reflects Apple’s broader AI catch-up effort. After delaying a more personalized Siri and evaluating multiple AI partners—including OpenAI and Anthropic—Apple ultimately partnered with Google’s Gemini to strengthen its AI foundation.
The bigger takeaway: AI assistants are no longer optional features. They’re becoming core platform capabilities, deeply embedded into operating systems—not standalone apps.
How well Apple executes this shift could determine whether Siri finally becomes competitive in an AI-first world.
